Arianespace and BULL Further Collaboration for Space Debris Mitigation on Ariane 6

Arianespace and BULL further collaboration for space debris mitigation on Ariane 6

In 2024 Arianespace and BULL signed a MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) to collaborate on space debris mitigation, based on a common understanding of the importance of sustainability in space.

Under the MOU, Arianespace and BULL performed a first step of a feasibility study to implement the HORN PMD (Post Mission Disposal) device, which is being developed by BULL, on the Ariane 6 DLS (Dual Launch System). The study showed that an installation of the HORN on the Ariane 6 DLS would be effective.

Both parties will now collaborate on the next step, targeting a flight demonstration of the HORN on the Ariane 6 DLS. Available launch slots are being identified, starting from 2027.

The HORN PMD is a very large deployable sail, developed by BULL, which accelerates the re-entry manoeuvre after the mission ends.

Arianespace signed the ESA Net Zero Space Agreement in 2021 and follows the French law on Space operations (FSOA). A proactive commitment to sustainable space has been a primary priority for the company. Collaboration with BULL will enable Ariane 6 to further contribute to meet the target of sustainability, preventing the creation of space debris.

“As a historic leader in bringing satellites to orbit and beyond, Arianespace has always been committed to a responsible use of space. This innovative collaboration with BULL, a start-up pioneering solutions to mitigate space debris, showcases Arianespace's dedication to being at the forefront of such critical issues. A sustainable use of space is a priority for us, and we are most keen on pushing forward emerging solutions that further sustainable activities in space”, said David Cavaillolès, Chief Executive Officer of Arianespace.
