Simera Sense and Zaitra Partner to Enhance Earth Observation Efficiency with Edge Suite for On-Orbit Intelligence
Simera Sense (Belgium) and Zaitra (Czech Republic) have announced a strategic collaboration to combine their respective technologies to address pressing bottlenecks in Earth Observation. In a world that demands instant decisions, satellites can’t afford to be just cameras in orbit.
They need to be smart, fast, and efficient. That’s why Simera Sense and Zaitra have joined forces to combine their technologies for smart compression, fast detection, and rapid decision-making; a breakthrough onboard processing solution designed to transform Earth Observation missions.
The Earth Observation sector is booming; relative to the last decade, it is expected that 2.75 times as many Earth Observation satellites will be launched in the next ten years (2025 to 2034), while four times as many satellites are expected to be equipped with space-based edge computers. This growth is driven by the explosion of high-resolution data and the urgent need for real-time insights. The collaboration between Simera Sense and Zaitra positions both companies at the forefront of this transformation.
Advanced sensors like Simera Sense’s MultiScape100 and HyperScape100 generate gigabits of data per scene, overwhelming downlink capacity and delaying critical decisions. When lives and resources are at stake, hours of latency are not an option.
The Combined Solution
Capture: Simera Sense’s instruments acquire rich multispectral and hyperspectral imagery for applications such as disaster response, agriculture, and urban planning.
Detect: Zaitra’s SKAISEN AI engine identifies high-value targets; urban areas, infrastructure, and disaster zones, while filtering out irrelevant data, such as clouds.
Compress Smart: SKAIPACK applies advanced JPEG2000 compression with Region of Interest (ROI) prioritisation. Critical regions are preserved in lossless quality, while low-value areas are aggressively compressed.
Transmit Fast: SKAIDOCK ensures high-speed onboard processing and progressive transmission, so the most important pixels reach analysts within minutes of acquisition.
Marek Marusin, CEO of Zaitra, said: “We’re bringing intelligence to the edge, enabling satellites to analyse data before they transmit and deliver insights exactly when they’re needed. Our technology achieves results 10x faster and 10x cheaper than the industry standard. And this is only possible thanks to our partnership with Simera Sense. Their flight-proven cameras provide the high-quality data our models rely on, enabling a seamless, integrated payload that raises the benchmark for commercial Earth observation.”
Thys Cronje, Chief Commercial Officer at Simera Sense, added: “Our imagers produce some of the most detailed data in the industry and we understand that delayed data means late decisions. With Zaitra’s Edge Suite onboard, we can overcome the bottlenecks that have long limited Earth Observation’s potential.”
