Simera Sense Launches xScape200 Dual-Use Imager for Commercial and Defence Earth Observation Missions
Simera Sense, the leading European provider of optical payload solutions for small satellites, has launched the xScape200 Dual-Use, an enhanced high-resolution Earth observation payload designed for commercial, government and defence missions.
The payload gives operators high-resolution, dual-use imaging without needing a larger spacecraft, higher launch costs or more power. Its compact size, low mass and low power demand bring 1.5 m imaging within reach of smaller satellite platforms and more distributed constellations.
The xScape200 Dual-Use builds on Simera Sense’s existing xScape200 product, retaining its 1.5 m ground sampling distance at an orbital altitude of 500 km, and introduces a series of improvements aimed at making the payload lighter, more robust and easier to operate.
The previous xScape200 used a detector whose end-use conditions meant it could not be used for military applications. The updated payload uses a US-made detector without this restriction, allowing satellite operators to deploy the system across a wider range of civil, security and defence missions.
The new model also weighs just 9.3 kg, compared with 12.31 kg for the previous version; and has a compact 12U volume. Its lighter carbon-fibre structure ensures greater stability and better vibration tolerance while lessening the burden placed on the satellite platform.
Its compact size allows operators to use the payload across several smaller satellites instead of relying on a few larger, more expensive ones. This can provide more chances to collect images, more frequent coverage and a fleet that is easier to expand, replace or adapt as needs change.
The xScape200 Dual-Use controls its own temperature more precisely, helping to prevent thermal variations from affecting focus or image quality. By managing the camera body, optical bench and the elements that correct for temperature-driven changes, it reduces the amount of thermal control required from the spacecraft bus and makes operation simpler for the satellite operator.
Other changes include qualification to higher vibration levels, compliant electromagnetic compatibility and electromagnetic interference performance, shielded electrical connectors, and the removal of magnetic structural materials. The payload is also expected to be available in an ITAR-free version, subject to formal classification. This could give international customers more choice when buying and integrating the system, while reducing reliance on US-controlled technology.
Its standard 12U size and interfaces can reduce the need for custom engineering. This can make the payload quicker and more cost-efficient to integrate and test, while lowering the risk of delays.

The xScape200 Dual-Use delivers a 12.3 km swath from an altitude of 500 km. Its many applications include precision agriculture, environmental monitoring, urban planning, forestry, maritime awareness, infrastructure observation, energy, defence, and security.
For government and defence missions, the payload provides high-resolution optical images alongside data from radar, radio-frequency, aircraft and ground-based systems. Combining these can give operators a clearer and more reliable picture.
Customers can choose from three principal configurations. The MonoScape200 DU provides monochrome snapshot imaging; the TriScape200 DU provides RGB colour imaging; the MultiScape200 DU supports nine-band multispectral and panchromatic pushbroom imaging across the visible and near-infrared range.
Alongside the launch of the xScape200 Dual-Use, Simera Sense is also introducing the xScape-XGS45000 Imager Electronics, giving customers the flexibility to integrate their own optics with the high-performance electronics at the heart of the xScape200 Dual-Use.
This modular approach allows customers to leverage Simera Sense’s proven imaging electronics while tailoring the optical configuration to their specific mission requirements. By combining customer-selected optics with flight-proven electronics, the xScape-XGS45000 provides a flexible pathway to high-performance Earth observation without requiring customers to develop the complete imaging system from the ground up.
The launch speaks to the increasing convergence of commercial and institutional Earth observation requirements. Governments and defence organisations are seeking access to more frequent and detailed imagery, while commercial operators need payloads that can support several markets without requiring larger spacecraft or significantly higher costs.
