TTP Satellite Modem Module Targets Smooth Network Transition to 5G NTN
TTP plc, the leading independent technology and product development services company, is developing a novel and highly flexible 5G NTN (non-terrestrial networks) modem module. Designed to form the core of future satellite solutions, including Ku- and Ka-band terminals, the new modem architecture supports operators’ competitive need for flexible, long-life satellite terminals to deliver on the opportunity for interoperability whilst bridging existing systems.
The module is software-defined and multi-band, enabling the highest level of flexibility and upgradeability to adapt as the industry, and networks, evolve. Software updates can be carried out quickly and efficiently in the field and an open architecture approach avoids the risk of vendor lock-in. Whilst software-defined to the greatest possible extent, hardware acceleration is retained to maintain performance where no compromise in flexibility is required.
The module meets the SWaP-C (size, weight, power and cost) demands required for the most demanding defence and commercial applications, including UAV connectivity. It has also been built with observability in mind, ensuring full visibility into the physical layer as well as the protocol stack, supporting improved network optimisation, diagnostics, debugging and performance analysis - all essential features for the optimisation of next-generation satellite networks. Data streams from this observability can be used to support AI-assisted reasoning, optimisation and control.

The modem benefits from TTP’s decades of modem design heritage, from TTPCom and proprietary satcoms networks such as BGAN through to 5G NTN, combining proven wireless engineering expertise with an independent, stack- and chipset-agnostic approach.
